Activities for NSW’s October Long Weekend

Come October, Sydneysiders start looking forward to the Monday morning sleep in of a long weekend. The 2010 Labour Day public holiday – which affords them this luxury – is Monday October 4. Enjoy your Monday morning sleep in, but don’t stay in bed all day. There’s a range of activities and events happening in Sydney to keep you occupied on your extended weekend.

What will you do this October long weekend?

  • Parklife. The Sydney festival that kicks of summer, Parklife is an electronicindie music festival, held at Kippax Lake. This year, the festival will be held on Sunday October 3, and the line-up includes Bag Raiders, Cut Copy, Groove Armada, Missy Elliott and The Dandy Warhols.
  • NRL Grand Final. Also held on Sunday October 3, rugby league fanatics will flock to the ANZ Stadium for the 2010 NRL Telstra Premiership grand final game. Who will be playing is still anyone’s guess, but grab your tickets now to be there for all the excitement – it’s sure to be a tight finish!
  • Darling Harbour Fiesta. A free event, the Darling Harbour Fiesta spans the whole 3 days of the long weekend (October 1-4) and is Australia’s biggest Latin American music and dance festival. In its 19th year running, the fiesta has a line-up of international and Australian performers on three outdoor stages complete with open-air dance floors. You can be a spectator, or get involved by taking the free salsa and zumba dance classes or sampling the unique flavours of Latin American food. If you’d like to feel some Latin flood flowing in your veins on the long weekend, then head to Darling Harbour!
  • Crave Sydney International Food Festival. This celebration of Sydney’s unmatched food lifestyle runs for the whole of October, with a jam-packed program of events. Whether you want to learn from the world’s best chefs at talks and presentations or take up the opportunity to try a variety of different foods, there’s something for all tastebuds in Sydney during October. Over the long weekend, there are a number of culinary events and activities to keep you occupied. Perfect Picnic, for example, will be held on Monday October 4 on Sydney Harbour’s Clark Island. Pack your own picnic and enjoy the music from DJ Lady Tre. There are prizes to be won, too!

There’s an event to keep all those in Sydney over the long weekend occupied. If you’re coming to the city for one of the above events or to visit, there’s a wide variety of accommodation in Sydney to choose from. If you’re looking for accommodation deals, Surry Hills and other inner city suburbs is a good place to start your search, and end up amongst all the action.
